The tiles in the basement section will be taken up, asbestos abatement will be done, and new tiles will be installed. The area for this work includes the hallway outside the restrooms/elevator, the staff lounge, and the small storage room.
Work is tentatively scheduled to begin the second or third week of July. At this point I do not know how long the job will take. During work on this project, staff and the public will not have access to this area -- including periodicals storage.
Once the work is complete, the small storage room will be empty and plans call for this room to be used to house the microforms cabinets. We will continue to use the staff longue as a staff lounge, but I'd appreciate your feedback on what to do with the card catalog. I assume that staff no longer are using the cards. For this tile work, the catalog must be disassembled and moved out of the staff lounge. While it is part of our history, we have struggled with space issues -- and even in the redesign and expansion plans for the library, no use (decorative or otherwise) was made for the catalog.
